Happy 5th Birthday, Emma!!!
My baby is turning 5 today. She is SOOO excited about this age, and the fact that the dentist told her 2 days ago that her two bottom teeth were loose. I keep telling her she's going to look like a jack-o-lantern but she doesn't seem to mind:) I received the Picaboo book in the mail yesterday and it's all wrapped up and ready for Emma to open up. It came out REALLY nice. Can't believe I...

Vita Mix Blender – The Kitchen Appliance No Home Should Be Without
I've got to be honest with you. I hate infomercials. I also don't care much for sales Kiosks where fast-talking snake oil salesmen wearing headset microphones attempt to mesmerize you with their clever words and trivial knowledge. In fact, the Vita Mix blender Kiosk at our local Costco had been up and running for several months before we finally approached it during one of our latest visits. Prior...

My Quest to Switch Over to Organic Foods

Posted By: Elena in Budget, Getting Started, Organic - Comments: No Comments »

I subscribe to 34 blogs, most of which are “coupon” sites. I love logging in to Google Reader and seeing all the updates in one place. This has become a big part of my life since I spend hours each week reading these blogs. However, I recently realized that only 1 of these 34 blogs actually writes about “organic deals”.

Over the last few months, I have heard a lot about the importance of eating organic foods and how harmful non-organic foods are due to the high number of pesticides and artificial ingredients used on/in them. But, it’s difficult to change your entire way after eating all that stuff for 40 years. So, although I do purchase organic foods every once in awhile, I also realize that the price difference is HUGE and so I continue to settle for non-organic foods.

My husband Mark has been trying to lose weight as he’s put on some unwanted pounds and I obviously want to help him so he’ll feel better about himself. He LOVES eating Pepperidge Farm Milanos and Starbucks coffee ice cream and I think he’s just been having it too often where the lack of exercise and indulgence of sweets has caught up with him. So as I began thinking about how I could help him I realized as I am the household shopper, I will have to stop buying the cookies and ice cream every week. If he doesn’t have them, well, he can’t eat them. Instead I will purchase lots of fresh fruit and this way he can have lots of “sweets” but in a healthy way.

If you recall a recent entry I did about Eating Organic Foods and the “dirty dozen”, then you realize that there are 12 fruits and veggies with TONS of pesticides that you want to avoid. This makes “budgeting” a little tougher as now I will need to purchase some “organic” fruits at much higher prices. But, I really feel that this is more important to our health than what the monetary price is going to cost us. After all, if you don’t eat healthy now, you are going to pay for it later, right? So I’ll rather “pay” high prices for organic fruit than “pay” high prices for our health.

I know many people will disagree with this post because they too don’t want to spend the extra money on organic foods, and that is fine. I am not telling you to. I feel that I need to make this change for my family and you are welcome to join me or not. Each family needs to do what they feel is right for their own family. I am not here to judge any one…I’ve been eating non-organic for 40 years, so who am I to judge?

As a matter fact, I am still going to continue following the 33 sites that talk about “non-organic food deals”. Why? Because they also cover all kinds of deals that I enjoy getting like free or cheap toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper, shampoo, paper towels, etc. I’m not switching everything I buy to organic, just foods.

One big price difference that I noticed when buying organic vs. non-organic, is with milk. A gallon of milk will cost $5.99, while I can get a non-organic gallon of milk for about half that price.

When I began this blog about a month ago, I started with “Where do I begin?” And I told you how “I set a goal to spend 40% less on my groceries than I had in the past 5 years. So, my weekly grocery budget went from $100 to $60 per week.” Well $60 per week for “organic” foods is not going to be easy but I am going to try. If I have to make some small adjustments, I will. I feel that this “healthy” alternative is much more important than the initial goal I had “to save money”. Believe me, I still want to save money, but my mindset is now different and with that I will have to have different strategies. Stick with me as I begin my quest of switching over to organic foods.
